How much are my milk glass bowls worth?

I bought a set of nesting milk glass bowls at Value Village today. The set is comprised of three shallow bowls, covered in points/hobnails, and each bowl has "Fenton" marked on the bottom. I just started collecting milk glass, so I really have no idea what the set might be worth.
** I've since done a little more research on the internet, and the milk glass is actually a graduated ashtray set. Does that help at all? **

Ridiculously wonderful 19th century Ford typewriter (Boing Boing)

Martin Howard sent us the latest addition to his stupendous antique typewriter
collection, an 1895 Ford:

> The Ford typewriter is a striking machine with its beautiful ornate grill
and gracefully integrated keyboard. It was a machine to grace the eyes but
would not have endeared itself to the typist, as the keys are rather springy
and wobbly when typing and the platen surprisingly does not have a line-by-
line clicking action. Also the shift keys for capitals and figures require a
solid push to operate, not a good design for fast typing. However, what the
Ford did have was visible writing, allowing one to see the typed words on the
platen as soon as they were typed. It was not the first to do this but most
contemporary typewriters were still blind writers, requiring one to lift the
carriage to see the last few typed lines.

> The Ford typewriter broke new ground in being the first typewriter to use
the new metal ‘aluminum’ in its construction. The Ford was sold in two
versions, one with an all aluminum frame and carriage and the other with a
cast iron, black enameled, frame and aluminum ...

Does anyone know where I can find a 8" X 9" Reverse Painted glass pane for a antique Seth Thomas Clock?

The clock is a vintage 1860s Seth Thomas split column clock. The door panel opening is 8" wide X 9" tall. The one source found on eBay did not work out. I would like to be able to see samples of work and be able to communicate via e-mail. Any suggestions?

John, I've bought replacement reverse-painted glass for several clocks at Merritt's. I would suggest calling them to see if they have a size you want -- I've found that's faster than going through their webpage. I believe they sometimes harvest old glass from unrepairable clocks. Their toll-free number for clock parts and supplies is: 1-800-345-4101.

Theory Of American Impressionism by Sanjay Kumar

Impressionism is 'The Theory or Method of suggesting an effect or impression without elaboration of the details.' It was a 19th century art movement that began in France. A new way of painting landscape and scenes of everyday life developed in France by Monet and others from early 1860s. Impressionist paintings have visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on Light, realist views and bright colors. It is said that the name of the movement is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant). Impressionism was introduced to American artist in the 1880's through exhibitions of the French impressionist in Boston and New York. Theodore Robinson was one of the first American artists to paint in an Impressionist style. American Impressionism flourished from 1890's through 1910s in art colonies, a place where creative people lived and interacted with one another. Post the 1910's impressionism had fizzled however was reborn in 1950's a quarter of a century after t

he death of Monet.

Some of the prominent American Impressionist painters are J. Ottis Adams, Lucy Bacon, John Noble Barlow, Charles W. Bartlett, Marilyn Bendell, Frank Weston Benson, Johann Berthelsen, John Elwood Bundy, Dennis Miller Bunker, Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase. American artists preferred the scenery of Hudson, unpolluted lakes, streams and landscapes but the Civil war changed everything for these artists. With all the changes American Impressionism found a new version and therefore painters found they were free of obligation and started experimenting. Mary cassatt and William Metcalf were the first exposed to the art when they were studying in Europe.

A few characteristics of American Impressionism are asymmetrical balance, use of colored shadows, use of pure color, broken color or broken brushstrokes, use of thick paint, subject matter, high horizontal lines, photographic influence, influence of Japanese prints and painted "En Plein Air" a French term that means outdoors. Painting in the open air is still a popular method among American Impressionists.
